Consequently, marketing plays a very important role in increasing awareness of EIR services, promoting their use and raising awareness of what higher education libraries provide in general.The case studies in this research, the governmental academic libraries in both the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) and Kuwait University (KU), subscribe to many databases, but the usage statistics reveal that some databases tend to be neglected. Therefore, marketing plays a role in increasing usage or, at least, in increasing interest in these resources.This multi-disciplinary research combines two areas namely, EIRs and marketing management. It focuses on how academic librarians promote sources of information to their customers. Therefore, the research aims to benefit from the marketing discipline to improve access to EIRs in the context of academic libraries.To date, no comprehensive research has explored the defective and inadequate marketing of EIRs in the Kuwaiti HE libraries context. These staggering figures have cause groups to form all across the country and organize their efforts to prevent this disease. One such organization is the Leadership for Healthy Communities, which is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The RWJF holds summits nationwide events calling on policy leaders nationwide to advance healthy eating and  active living options in their communities. According to the RWJF, a special emphasis has een placed on collaborative state and community policy approaches that address childhood obesity among vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the epidemic. The RWJF also has a panel, which consists of its chairmen, doctors, lawyers, but more importantly politicians on the state and federal level who are taking childhood obesity head-on and working with organizations like the RWJF to promote healthy, cost effective change in communities nationwide. Arkansas, as well as many other states, has adopted legislation preventing the sale of â€Å"fatty foods† within its public schools. Arkansas Act 1220 was adopted and immediately implemented in 2003, creating the state’s first Child Health Advisory Committee, which coordinates Statewide Efforts to Combat Childhood Obesity and related Illnesses and works to improve the Health of the Next Generation of Arkansans, and banned the sale of â€Å"fatty foods and soft drinks† within public schools of all levels. The amount of legislation passed and adopted grew dramatically from 2003 to 2005. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention performed a nationwide scan of legislation from all 50 states to determine how much, if any, legislation had been or is in the process of being passed by state governments to combat childhood obesity. From this study, the CDC identified 717 bills and 134 resolutions that focus on childhood obesity. The results pulled from this study are as follows: 17% of bills and 53% of resolutions were adopted on the state level. The CDC statistically grouped all legislation and resolutions passed into topic areas with most legislation focusing on school nutrition standards and vending machines, physical education and activity, and studies, councils, or task forces created for the prevention of childhood obesity on the community level. Community related topic areas adopted through bills were walking and biking paths, which accounted for 37% of bills passed, farmers’ markets, which accounted for 36% of bills passed, and statewide initiatives which focus primarily on model school policies and safe routes to school. The only reason she even gets that little privilege is because she holds a status as a â€Å"psychological parent.† Instead her lesbian partner has custody because she is the one who gave birth through artificial insemination in 1994. That is not right at all. He would still be the same parent he was before. Professionals serving in the army, especially those, who want to become leaders, hav e to be aware of key competences and features that army leaders should match as well as all professionals serving in the army should. At this point, it is possible to refer to the army’s 3Cs, which include character, competence, and commitment. These features are crucial for soldiers and officers because they comprise the core of a true military.The character implies that an army professional’s dedication and adherence to the Army values, virtues, purpose, identity, ethics, and morals as consistently and faithfully demonstrated in decisions and actions. The respect and adherence to the army values, virtues, purpose, identity, ethics and morals are crucial for professionals working in the military because they should be aware of the background of the organization, where they work and stick to its system of values. Otherwise, there is no room for professionals, who disregard the traditional set of values of the US army. The successful military leadership starts with unde rstanding the army’s set of values, its character and adherence to those values. The leader should not only manifest respect and understanding of those values but also personify them to make soldiers following his/her lead.The competence means that an army professional’s demonstrated ability to successfully perform their duties and to accomplish the mission with discipline and to standard. Professionals working in the army should be able to perform their duties perfectly, especially leaders. Discipline and fulfillment of duties are primary concerns of soldiers and officers because they are crucial for the army. In fact, discipline and fulfillment of duties determine, whether the army can perform its military tasks successfully or not (Hendrix, 2009). The lack of discipline or poor fulfillment of professional duties by the military can lead to the failure of military operations and undermine the effectiveness of the army. On the contrary, the ability of the army and pro fessionals working in the army to stick to the strict discipline and fulfillment of their duties makes the army, which is properly equipped and supplied, virtually undefeatable.The commitment implies that the resolve of army professionals to contribute Honorable Service to the Nation, to perform their duties with discipline and to standards, and to strive to successfully and ethically accomplish the mission despite adversity, obstacles, and challenge. The commitment is essential for the successful development of a leader in the military environment. More important, the commitment can contribute to the development of the successful political career. The rise of the political leader committed to his or her nation is one of the essential conditions of the popularity of the leader among people. People adore leaders committed to nation and traditional American values, as was the case of Theodore Roosevelt, for example, who manifested his commitment to the US and traditional American valu es. This is why his people adored him as the military leader and Americans liked him as the political leader of the nation.Theodore Roosevelt is my leader of influence, whose attributes and competencies contributed to the military and the community consistently. He was a charismatic leader, who stuck closely to traditional American values. Even though, in some respects, his traditionalism was excessive. For example, he was renowned for his robust masculinity but, in his time, this was a distinct feature of the leader and male domination was traditional in the US in the late 19th – early 20th century (Rofe, 2008). At the same time, he was a charismatic leader with a strong will. For example, he grew as a weak child, who suffered from asthma. However, in spite of his serious health problems, he focused on his physical development. For example, he practiced boxing at Harvard. In addition, he was ambidextrous and proficient in different fields, from biology to history. In such a way, a true leader cannot be skilled in one field only, like the military, for example. Instead, the leader should be like Theodore Roosevelt, proficient in different fields and be physically and intellectually well-developed.At this point, the development of my leader of influence contributed to his personal growth and development as a soldier and leader (Ricard, 2006). For example, his strong will and physical training, along with his habit to overcome difficulties and challenges, have proved to be very useful for his personal growth and development as a soldier and leader. Moreover, he was a true patriot of the US, who loved his fatherland and believed that the US should play the leading part in the region. This is why he headed his regiment of cowboys in the Spanish American war, while his activities and wins in Cuba had brought him the national approval and recognition.Furthermore, he had proved to be a true leader, who was recognized and followed blindly by his soldiers (Holme s, 2006). His soldiers really liked him and they were ready to follow his lead, even when operations conducted by Roosevelt were risky. Moreover, it was Roosevelt, who persuaded them to join him and take part in the Spanish American war. Roosevelt was also the leader, who had managed to unite western and eastern cowboys.The legacy that I would like to leave is similar to the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt. Americans liked him and ignored his pitfalls. The legacy that I want to leave is one that can effectively and positively affect the lives of the soldiers that serve under me and my family. I would like soldiers under my lead to follow me blindly and believe in every move that I make without hesitation so that I could rely on my soldiers and conduct military operations under my lead and responsibility (Oyos, 2011).   At the same time, I would also like to be a leader, whom soldiers remember and like. Moreover, I would also like to be a leader, who establishes the family environment within his military unit, when each soldier treats each other as family members and are ready to die for each other.   At the same time, I believe that the true military leader keeps growing not only professionally but also personally. For example, while serving in the military I have become a better father and husband and that by being a father and husband I am a better soldier.Thus, leadership is crucial for military and political leaders. At this point, it is possible to refer to the example of Theodore Roosevelt, who was the true leader of the army and the entire nation. His soldiers perceived him like a father, while the nation perceived him as a true national leader, who stood for national interests of the US and stuck to traditional American values. This is why I would like to be similar to Theodore Roosevelt as the military and political leader. His legacy is worth studying and his leadership model is worth following. As for me, I expect to have the similar legacy and I w ould like my soldiers liked me and treated me like a father.

Is There Asian-American Discrimination in College Admissions and SAT / ACT Prep SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Recently, there has been substantial coverage about whether colleges discriminate against Asian-Americans in admissions and even test prep. What does that mean for these students? How should such students navigate SAT / ACT prep and college admissions? This article surveys the current state of admissions and gives some tips. Disclaimer: The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent those of PrepScholar or any affiliate. While even broaching this topic can be seen as controversial, I also believe, as an educator, that I’m responsible for giving advice that helps the greatest number of students understand the landscape. This article specifically addresses Asian-Americans applying from the US and not applicants directly applying from Asia. Introduction The intersection of race and college admissions has always been a sensitive issue, but recently it has boiled over to the front pages of newspapers. Sociology professor Thomas Espenshade writes that â€Å"To receive equal consideration by elite colleges, Asian-Americans must outperform Whites by 140 points [on the 1600-scale SAT].† Data from the National Center for Education Statistics show that, while Asians of college age doubled in the last 25 years, their enrollment rates at Ivy-League schools have stayed the same. S.B. Woo, founder of the National Asian-American Educational Foundation,concludes that the â€Å"discrimination is obvious†. Others defend using race as a factor in admissions. Director of Education Equity Khin Aung argues that considering race allows benefits of diversity such as â€Å"creating the most effective learning environment.† Jeff Neal, a spokesperson at Harvard, states that Harvard â€Å"continues to support the use of holistic admissions process," which implicitly includes race. To catch up with the current state of conversation on the topic, all you have to do is Google â€Å"Asian college admissions†. Are Asian-Americans Discriminated Against in College Admissions? The value of affirmative action is controversial, but the existence of affirmative action is undisputed. The vast majority of experts in college admissions and SAT / ACT prep agree that affirmative action exists - college admissions is not totally blind to race. Given an ACT / SAT score range, it is an empirical fact that Asian-Americans have a lower acceptance rate than the average white American in many data setssuch as the Espenshade and Radford 1997 elite college admissions data. Likewise, a survey of the admitted class of 2017 at Harvard revealed that SAT scores for Asians (including Indians) were higher than those of whites. However, as anyone who has studied statistics can tell you (and I do have a Master’s degree in the field), those facts above are correlations and not causations. They suggest, but do not prove, that an Asian-American with otherwise the same application to the same school as a white American will have a lower chance of admission. I call this the Hypothesis that being Asian Lowers Admissions Chances (HALAC). HALAC, of course, implies that being Asian means that getting into a given college will be harderfor you than for a white American. What This Article Does and Does Not Do This article will give you advice as to what an Asian-American may want to consider doing to maximize chances of college admissions. On both the front of the university and the government, policy moves too slowly for it to help most Asian-Americans with this issue. Therefore, this article doesn't take any stance on the correct institutional policies or political views as a response to HALAC. Additionally, given that causality is difficult to prove, this article doesn't take a stance on whether causally the HALAC effect exists. Instead, this article focuses on things you, as an Asian-American, can do right now to maximize your chances of being accepted into top colleges. If you read through the evidence and believe that the HALAC effect exists, then the suggestions below can be useful to you. If you Google the evidence and don't think it supports HALAC, that's fine too - the advice below will be less applicable to you in that case. What Doesn't Work Before I give you the tips for what works for Asian applicants under the HALAC effect, I will first go over what absolutely doesn’t work. First, lying doesn’t work nearly as well as you might think.What if you just don’t check the Asian box? What if you check â€Å"don’t want to disclose†? The problem is that colleges can often tell your race through other means. You do have to give colleges your legal name - if your last name is Nguyen, Lee, Kim, or Patel, for example, the admissions staff will almost certainly figure it out. What about just changing your name or making up your name? This will really get you into hot water as colleges are pretty good about calling your past teachers and running background checks on you. A good rule of thumb is this: if a casual friend who knows you would unambiguously say you’re of Asian ethnicity, it’s hard to get around it. Just put down that you’re Asian and be done with it. By telling the truth on your name and ethnicity box, you at least signal honesty. On the other hand, if you have a legitimate reason for not identifying as Asian, then you can, in fact, consider this path. Suppose you’re genetically 25% Asian and 75% Hispanic, and your parents were both born in the United States. Some college applications ask you to identify with one or as many ethnicities as you want. Under the HALAC effect you probably do want to omit Asian, if allowed. Also, mass action will rarely work to your advantage for admissions. By mass action, I mean protesting the HALAC effect, suing colleges, complaining to the government, and so forth. Colleges may be reluctant to admit a student likely to cause the administration a headache.Remember, university administration is a highly political entity. The government political process also works way too slowly. It will cost millions to fight it out in court and years to reach a judgment. If your goal is to raise your chances of admissions under the HALAC effect, I would think twice about filing an official grievance. Of course, there are other fine reasons that you may want to take mass action in the future, perhaps due to your political or ethical beliefs. However, I’m just telling you that, almost always, taking official or mass action won’t increase your personal short-term chances of getting into a certain school. Who Does This Article Apply To? This article applies much more to Americans of Asian heritage, i.e. students who have studied in the US at least a few years before they apply to college. It applies much less to students who are applying directly from another country. These latter students are better classified as international students. For them, there is a whole set of other factors that are more important - for example appetite of a college for internationalstudents, authenticity of documents, etc. Throughout this article, the term â€Å"Asian† includes Indian and other ethnically related neighbors - since the data across these groups are all similar. How You Can Combat the HALAC Effect Now that you understand what the HALAC effect is, how can you use that information to increase your chances of getting into top schools? Below are three strategies for combating the HALAC effect; read through them to learn how to maximize your chances of admission. Step 1: Account for the HALAC Effect Before you can combat the HALAC effect, first you have to find where it exists. The HALAC effect is not something that can be magically erased by easy action on your part. Therefore, in response to the HALAC effect, the first and most important thing that a student of Asian heritage should do is to account for it correctly. By this, I mean realizing that your chances of getting in are lower and planning accordingly which colleges you’ll apply to and how you’ll apply to them. Accounting for the HALAC effectmeans that you should adjust where your reach, target, and safety schools are. Instead of putting them as high as you might otherwise, target them a little lower. If you target too high, you run the risk of overshooting - not getting into the target schools of your choice and instead getting into a safety school that you didn’t spend much time researching. You should also account for the HALAC effect more at classically â€Å"elite† colleges. Colleges that are US News ranked 1-10 probably suffer most from HALAC, with the effect decreasing through colleges 10-50 in rank. The effect becomes much lower in colleges ranked above 50. In fact, most HALAC studies focus on the top colleges for exactly this reason: the effects are more concentrated and more statistically significant there. There are many potential reasons for the concentration of the HALAC effect on highly ranked colleges. Proportionally, more Asians apply to these colleges, leading to the HALAC effect when colleges diversify away from Asians. Also, these schools tend to care the most about diversity factors because they are already oversubscribed by great academic performers. These diversity factors tend to be big drivers of the HALAC effect. Conversely, a more moderately rated college will show a lesser HALAC effect because, to them, someone academically strong is itself a great asset. How do you account for the HALAC effect? One method is to apply to more colleges when doing applications. Apply to three times the number of reach schools you would otherwise and twice the number of target schools. Applying to more schools ensures that you compensate for lower chances due to HALAC. The more accurate method to account for HALAC is to just do an SAT / ACT score adjustment. That is, lower your SAT by 100 points (on the 1600 scale) or yourACT score by 2 points, and then go through the colleges you’re applying to â€Å"as if† you got your adjusted score. For example, if you really got a 1500 on your SAT, think of your chances of getting into college as if you got a 1400 instead. When you look up your chances using our â€Å"what are my chances table†, use 1400 instead of 1500. By doing this adjustment, you’ll correctly identifythe right reach, target, and safety schools. Why 100 points on the SAT and 2 points on the ACT? These are rough numbers that are closest to a large set of consensus estimates for the HALAC effect. They’re a little lower than the Espenshade study but higher than some other casual surveys. I should disclaim that these numbers are rules of thumb and not hard scientific numbers. Also, for rank 1-10 schools, you should adjust for the full 100 points, but if you’re applying to schools ranked 10-50, a rule of thumb is you can account for just a 50-point adjustment. The adjustment beyond rank 50 will be smaller still. Step 2: Combat the HALAC Effect Through Test Scores Given that Asians need a 100-point increase on the 1600-SAT to reach the same admissions chances, another way to combat the effect is just by having a higher SAT / ACT score.This does require more time and dedication, but it’s definitely possible. It’s not easy to improve by 100 points on the SAT or 2 points on the ACT. However, such improvements are definitely doable. In fact, we at PrepScholar have a 160-point guarantee for the SATand a 4-point guarantee for the ACT.You’ll need to work harder, but you can overcome the HALAC effect this way. Some stereotype Asians as studying more than usual forthe SAT / ACT. However, with their need to score higher just to have the same chances under HALAC, this behavioris much less of a surprise. Step 3: Combat the HALAC Effect Through Diversity in Other Areas To combat HALAC closer to its roots, it’s useful to examine how the HALAC effect arises. Supporters of affirmative action, including the universities themselves, always emphasize diversity as the primary goal. While one can argue about whether that is the sole goal of affirmative action, it is clear that diversity provides a strong channel to drive the HALAC effect. Looking at the diversity driver of the HALAC effect will be another key for Asians to overcome it. Under this diversity driver model, the reason HALAC occurs is because, in the eyes of admissions officers, too many Asian applicants all look the same on paper. They are too similar along too many dimensions. These applicants all do well in school, have high ACT / SAT scores, play violin or piano, and play a racketsport like tennis. Oh and, of course, they are all Asian. The problem from the point of diversity isn’t that an applicant is merely Asian, but rather that an entire host of applicants all look the same along other dimensions. A colorful but useful analogy for the diversity needs of colleges is putting horses into barn stalls. The horses represent applicants, and the barn stalls are the â€Å"spaces† and archetypes that the school has for these applicants. One stall might be labeledâ€Å"Asian, high grades, piano player† - and this stall is overfilled. But if you were white, the â€Å"white, high grades, piano player† stall is only half full! You can’t change your ethnicity, but you can definitely change your other labels, your other dimensions. It turns out that â€Å"Asian, high grades, lacrosse star† is wide open too! Why not fill that stall instead? Put in more theoretical terms, to the extent the HALAC effect is about diversity, you can generate diversity along other dimensions. Instead of being an Asian who’s a top ranked violin player (stereotypical Asian), why not try being a top guitar player? You can go further than that. While a guitar is not stereotypically Asian, it is still a very common instrument. Perhaps you are better off trying to be a top French horn player? Instead of playing badminton, why not try soccer or squash? Generally, think about what the stereotypical Asian applicant looks like. If you can be equally good along a dimension but break the stereotype, it is definitely to your advantage. Being in your state’s top 20 tennis players is probably less advantageous than being one of your state’s top 20 lacrosse players. Being a top 50 debater in your state is probably better than being a top 50 math competitor. It is important that you break the Asian stereotype in ways that are low cost to you. If you can jump from being a top 20 tennis player to a top 20 lacrosse player for free, you definitely should. But life is rarely that simple - and that’s just one of many reasons I don’t like the plain advice â€Å"appear less Asian†. What if you’re a nationally ranked tennis player and don’t know a thing about lacrosse? What if math is your passion and debating is more boring to you than breaking rocks? You have to account for the fact that breaking stereotypes can be costly. I would say that, for an Asian applicant, a rank 50 state debater is stronger than a rank 50 math competitor. But a rank 50 debater is definitely weaker than a rank 5 state math competitor and is probably equal to a rank 20 state math competitor. When it comes to top colleges, they care about what you’re best at and your natural spike. I would be extremely cautious about sacrificing your best dimension in the name of diversity. In fact, I would almost never sacrifice your spike for diversity. The take-away message is this: if you can diversify in extracurriculars at low cost, then do it. However, if you have a special talent, and it happens to be in an area that â€Å"looks Asian†, then don’t give it up. The right calibration is probably a loss of 2x in rank. If you can switch from an Asian-heavy activity to an Asian-light one and lose just 1.5x in rank (e.g. rank 20 to rank 30), then make the switch. But if you have to give up 4x in rank (rank 20 to rank 80), don’t make the switch. Summary Hopefully, the above article gives you a good sense of the unique landscape that Asian-American applicants face in United States college admissions. We started out with some background on the debate - although if you want the full story it’s best to Google the controversy yourself. Then we talked about what the data shows and whether you believe in the Hypothesis of Asians having Lower Admissions Chances. In such a case, we examined how big the HALAC effect can be (about 100 points on the SAT scale). The good news is that there are steps Asian-Americans can take to increase their chances. First, look for diversity in dimensions beyond race; look for diversity in extracurriculars. Second, it’s important to ensure that you’re strong on the SAT / ACT front to make up those 100 points. Do both of these things and you'll give yourself a much better shot at getting into your dream schools. What's Next? It was observed that only a few IOs that existed in the 1980s were still active in the 1990s. This period saw the collapse of many IOs but new ones were created. These were known as the second generation IOs that include UNDP, UN, UNCTAD, IDA, IFC, and World Bank. These were created through the actions of other IOs and are probably less important than the traditionally created ones but they are led by institutional rules, goals, and commitments. These emanations comprised 70% of the population in 1992; this was an increase from 64% a decade earlier as stated by Cheryl et al. (1998). The mortality of IOs is hard to understand given that they are known to be naturally sticky. First, the longer the institutions have been in existence, the more likely they are to survive. Secondly, the failure of the Eastern bloc and the political and economic instability in Africa led to the collapse of the IOs in the region. Finally, the mortality rate was higher for second and third generation IOs than the treaty ones where the stickiness issues were more likely to be seen. The current work on IOs has provided limited insight into the processes of institutional change. IOs in the policy areas characterized by unattractive options leave dissatisfied member states with minimum leverage, therefore, tend to be dependent and rigid (Mibler, 2008). Those with attractive options change relatively in response to underlying shifts in the member interest and capabilities.

Is the Common Agricultural Policy Prepared for the 2004 Enlargement? The voluntary cooperation among the European nations has survived numerous political and economic turbulences since its general inception after World War II. Fifty-five years ago, the Marshall Plan was proposed, leading to today’s European Union (EU) which seeks an â€Å"ever closer union among the European peoples.† The Enlargement of 2004 will integrate ten more European countries into the framework of the EU. As the number of member states rise from 15 to 25, is the EU prepared to handle the shock of adding ten poor nations whose economical structure differs from its own? No, it is not. The most significant threat of the Enlargement, thus far, revolves around the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The EU recognizes that it will suffer tremendous economic consequences if it is not fully prepared to handle the effects of integrating the poor agricultural countries. Thus it has been attempting to reform the CAP. But the revision of the EU’s agricultural policies and budget expenditures in the past decade has farmers and other agricultural workers worrying about the effects of the 2004 Enlargement. There is a need to overhaul the current Common Agricultural Policy to make acquis communautaire, acceptance of current EU laws and regulations, more attainable and to adjust the agricultural sector’s share of the EU’s budget to more accurate levels in proportion to the European workforce. This paper briefly examines the European Union’s CAP origins, evolution, and current Enlargement focus. Recent 2002 changes adopted by the EU in Brussels and CAP reforms for achieving an â€Å"ever closer union† with the candidate countries will be addressed. Introduction One of the European Union’s strengths lies in its success with market integration of its member states to achieve a political union and attain peace and prosperity. The Common Market was established by actively removing barriers that affected trade among the member states. This economic relationship between the European nations was extended to the agricultural sector via the Common Agricultural Policy. The Common Agricultural Policy has been noted as a structural foundation of the European Union. The adoption of the CAP has allowed Europe to shift from being a major food importer to a major exporter. Since the 1950s and 1960s, the CAP remains an economic burden on the EU budget due to its large share of the budget expenditure.

How far was the failure of the general strike due to the actions of the conservative government? Essay

The general strike of May 1926 was not a success for those attempting to force the government to act to prevent wage reductions and worsening conditions for coal miners. Had the TUC been more prepared to strike and followed through with what the miners wanted them to do, the government would have been faced with a much tougher challenge. Despite this, even if the conservative government were faced with a tougher challenge, the preparations and subsequence actions taken by them were more than enough and the main reason for the failure of the strike. Firstly the failure of the strike was due to the conservatives because Baldwin and his government holding emergency powers under the ‘Emergency Powers Act’, which enabled them to set up the Organisation for the Maintenance of Supplies. This organised 100,000 volunteers to be drafted in to help troops by moving essential supplies such as coal from place to place in Britain. Transport services were also kept going by the volunteers meaning that for most people, life was as it was before the strike started. As a result of this, the impact of the strike was not felt with the devastating effect to Britain that it could well have had but more importantly it kept people happy, which ensured that the government always had the sense of being in control. Baldwin and his government were able to appease the miners by offering them a subsidy in their wages for nine months. These nine months gave the government time to set up the Organisation for the Maintenance of Supplies and prepare for the strike which Baldwin was anticipating. The subsidy also created time for situation on wages to slightly calm down Generally it can be said that the conservative government had prepared well for the strike and thus as a result had full control over the situation. They had stockpiled resources, 250,000 special constables were put on hold to be used against strikers and local authorities were told to not give poor relief to strikers. Law and order was maintained almost all the time throughout the strike and violence was kept to a minimum and was well contained when it did break out. Baldwin and his government seemed patriotic which appealed more than the militancy of the strikers, and resisted the more extreme measures proposed by Churchill by turning down the need of the army to control. By doing this, he put faith in the British public, angered few people and thus had control of the situation. Indeed, the Prime Minister Baldwin spoke regularly on radio, and brought up the notion that the strike was a threat to the British constitution and challenged the government. Especially with the unrest that was being seen around Europe, most people in Britain did not want to see the constitution to be threatened. Vitally, several members of the TUC became worried about this and therefore there was a lack in confidence in the strike and it was not carried through with as much courage that it might otherwise have. As well as this the government referred to the strike as a ‘General Strike’ to create a sense the unions trying to undermine the democratically elected government. They presented the strike as the majority of the population of Britain being undermined by 4,000,000 union members. This didn’t appeal to most people and so they decided to not take part in the strike meaning it wasn’t effective and thus it failed because of the government acting to gain the population on their side by using the idea that the countries democracy was under threat. Despite the actions that the conservative government took, played the main part in ensuring the strike was a failure, there were also other reasons to why it did not succeed. Most importantly the TUC were not well prepared to strike and when they did, the 90 unions that took part were not fully committed to it. This made life for the government a lot easier than it could well have been if the strike had been that had they all wanted to strike. From the beginning of the strike there was a distinct lack of communication between the TUC and the local striking committees. On occasion such as at Swansea, the messages were so vague and contradictory that the strikers thought that the government were intervening with the messages. There was a lot of confusion during the 9 days and as it wore on the TUC knew that there was a strong chance that they would lose all control. As a result it was almost inevitable that with all the confusion, the strike would fail. The lack of unions that actually took part in the strike also contributed to its failure to both have an impact and to live up to its name as being a ‘General Strike’. The printers, gas and electricity, transport and railway workers were only some of a limited number of unions that went on strike. This meant that the strike could not have its effect that it was meant to. The fact that the general public didn’t give their support to the strike meant that there was a feeling around the country that what the strikers were doing was pointless. Indeed the way in which the TUC didn’t want to be seen in a violent way also meant that they did not want to be seen as revolutionaries so went into the strike half heartedly and thus it failed. The labour party and the trade unions had a very close relationship with each other. The trade unions had helped to fund the party. However during the lead up to the strike, the Labour party, led by Ramsey MacDonald, made it clear that they were not supportive of the strike. The relationship between the unions and Labour was especially important to the TUC and they did not want to break the relationship by striking. This meant that they reluctantly went in to strike and therefore the strike did not have the effect that the TUC would have otherwise wanted it to. The blame can also be put on the daily mail workers who went on strike. Despite the TUC not doing it, they were blamed for it and the negotiations with the government were brought to an end. As well as making it an uphill battle for the TUC. From then on the TUC knew that the longer the strike went on, the worse chance they had of winning and thus it failed In conclusion whilst the fact that the TUC were very badly prepared for the strike and were caught off guard by the Daily Mail workers, the government played the main part in ensuring that the strike didn’t spiral out of control by being well prepared. Even if the TUC had been more radical with the strike, it is clear that the government were more than well prepared to deal with violence because of the special constables that they had and the Organisation for the Maintenance of Supplies that was ready to step in as volunteers. I am performing in a Play called Trojans Essay

It is an old Greek legend but has been re-written and modernised as a play by Simon Adorian. It is about a siege of the city of Troy by the Achaeans. It was over Princess Helena who Prince Paris stole off the leader of the Achaeans, Menelaus. It is shown that it is set in modern times by the spray painting by my character, Prince Cassius, at the beginning and when Laocoon talks about the burnt out cars in scene 3. It uses a Greek style in the way it is written by using a chorus, the youths, although in Greek plays these parts would usually have been sung rather than acted out. The other play I have studied is â€Å"Oedipus the King†. This is a Greek play that is set in Greek times. Greek theatre differed very much from today’s theatre because there was no scenery. It had a raised section on the back of the stage, on which actors stood in order to be seen better. Any murder that took place was committed off stage, but with the chorus filling in the details. The dead body was the brought on the stage on a flat low trolley with wheels to show who had been murdered. The performance styles of the two plays do not differ too much from each other. The chorus still exists in Trojans through the youths, rather than an off stage singing group. Both plays have women in the positions of power and status. Trojans is a modern play with modern cultural themes portrayed through the characters. This would appeal to a modern audience more readily than Oedipus. Oedipus would have been performed in ancient times. In the Greek theatre only male actors were allowed. Also no women were allowed in the audience so it would have been a play by men for men. Trojans now has a mixed audience and therefore explores the issues women have as well as men. This is shown by the peace protestors, who are mainly women, and the youths, who are mainly men. The way plays were portrayed to the audience in Greek times was solely through the chorus, who described the scenery and who was who. There were only three actors in the play, therefore character changes were shown through wearing different masks. The chorus would also have to explain the weather and the theatres were open air and plays were performed in daylight because there was no lighting equipment. Things could also be conveyed through a character called the messenger. He would describe off stage action in long and elaborated speeches. This is closely shown in the character of the spokesman, who describes the off stage battles. As Trojans is set in modern times, different lighting effects and scenery can be used. This mean that there is no need for a passive chorus, but to maintain the Greek feeling Adorian added in an active chorus through the youths. They give transitions between scenes when it is required. The themes in the two play are quite similar. They both revolve around the royal families. With Princess Cassius fronting the peace protest in Trojans, and King Oedipus having been prophesised to kill his father, and does. They are both tragedies. King Oedipus finds out what he has done and that he has fulfilled the prophecy. The tragedy in Trojans is that the Achaeans win in the end. The characters in the two plays are similar. The chorus in Greek plays, although not strictly characters, are very closely similar to the youths by applying transitions between the scenes. Also the Messenger in Greek plays is very similar to the Spokesman, who provides elaborate and vivid word pictures of what is going on in the city and what has happened in the various battles with the Achaeans. The royal families are not similar however due to the fact that the real tragedy at the end is not to do with them as it is in Oedipus, it is to do with the youths. Reflecting on this I will play my character as flippant, perhaps a little ignorant and nai ve. The attitude he takes to the Royal family is that of disrespect and he has a bit of a love hate relationship with them, as they are his family. I would play him as strong headed and wilful due to the fact that he is fronting an active campaign against the war.

Analysis The type of graph I have is as straight line in a positive correlation. The results are directly proportional which means as the mass of magnesium goes up, the mass of magnesium oxide goes up. The ratio is a constant ratio would always stay the same as long as the magnesium ribbon gets a constant supply of the same amount of oxygen every time throughout the whole experiment. This is because there are more magnesium atoms for oxygen to join with. The formula for working out the slope is: My equation was: This shows that the magnesium oxide which I have produces is Mg3O2 because 1. 44 (gradient of Mg3O2) is the closest match to my gradient, 1. 5. You cant use anything like half an atom so magnesium would lose 2 electrons and give them to oxygen and because they would become ions the structure of the molecule would be an ionic bond in a giant lattice. I used the points 0. 00 because it would be the easiest to deal with. The gradient links directly to the increase in product because it shows a positive correlation continuously. Evaluation The things that prevented or could have prevented our results from being reliable and accurate are these: * Lifting the Lid from the crucible How this affected our results is that while lifting the lid some smoke would be released into the air and that smoke is magnesium oxide and because there is magnesium oxide being released into the air that means there would be a reduction in mass which also means that we would get the wrong result for a particular length. Why we had to lift the lid was so that we could check if the reaction stopped and to let oxygen in so that the reaction could continue well. How I could make sure that this does not happen is by tilting the lid enough so that I can see if the reaction has finished and I would only tilt it for a second so that very, very little smoke get released. * Layer of Magnesium Oxide on the crucible The effect if this is that it would increase the mass of magnesium oxide we record because there is extra magnesium oxide that was not cleaned off. This would cause our results to be unreliable because it would almost be like we have made a product without anything is apparently (according to scientists) impossible. How I could prevent this from happening is by making sure that I clean the crucible so that any if any magnesium oxide was left in the crucible it would be removed. Or we could just use a new crucible. * Other formulas for magnesium oxide There uncountable numbers of possible formulas, so out of all the possible formulas there are there is a low chance that the formula that my data shows it could be may not be it, so this makes my conclusion unreliable. How we could improve our accuracy for this is by taking more records of other formulas and their gradients. * Unstable balance This would have an impact on my results accuracy and reliability because the balance kept on changing due to vibration from tables being hit and by wobbling the table which cause the balance to be unstable for quite some time. Why this is affecting our results is because we cannot be sure if the readings we have recorded are reliable because we recorded them while the balance was unstable. A way in which we could avoid this from having an effect on our results could be by isolating the room during the time we take in the results so that there would be minimal vibrations travelling through the table and floor. * Distance between the crucible and the flame from the Bunsen burner How this can alter my results accuracy is by creating less magnesium oxide because if the distance between the two are to long then there would be less heat reaching the crucible but this would only impact our results if the distance between the two was different each time because for each tests the impact of the affect would be the same. Cutting magnesium ribbons in right lengths inaccurately This would affect my reliability by giving me incorrect readings for each mass because when recording the mass I would be recording a result which would be completely of scale if the lengths were cut very accurately. How I could prevent this from happening is by using a ruler, stretching out the ribbon and cutting the ribbon with appropriate and accurate equipment e. g. scissors. E=MC2 This comes into effect in my experiment because before measuring the crucible we needed to wait for the crucible to cool down otherwise the heat would cause an increase in mass. So we would wait for the crucible to cool down before weighing it as energy is mass and mass is energy regardless of form of energy according to the theory behind E=MC2. If I dont wait for the crucible to cool down then my result would appear that the magnesium oxide as been formed from a higher mass of magnesium. Not just oxygen reacting with oxygen In the atmosphere there is not only oxygen, oxygen is only 21% of the atmosphere, 78% is nitrogen so what would also be made is magnesium nitrate. This would mean that some of my results could be unreliable because I dont know exactly how much nitrogen oxide has really been made in there is also nitrogen attached to magnesium. What I would do is remove the nitrogen by adding water. This would then create magnesium hydroxide and what I would do to change it to magnesium oxide is by heating it. I would not say that my results are very reliable because of the formula that I have create was Mg3O2 but logically it should be MgO because the correct ratio would 24:16 in mass terms and in the terms of the number of atoms from each element joining up against each other should be 1:1 and this is only because magnesium would lose 2 electrons to get a full shell and the oxygen would gain 2 electrons to get a full shell to make an ionic bond in a giant lattice. Another reason why I would say that my results are quite unreliable is because there were a lot of problems which caused the test to be quite unfair which was the lack of oxygen so what we did was we lifted the lid several times to get some oxygen in, but by doing that it lets some magnesium oxide out which would cause an accidental decrease in mass. But when looking at my graph and ignoring the gradient being 1.5 all my points on the graph are either or very close to the line of best fit and the average points dont scatter and the error bars are mainly small which indicates that my results are accurate, theyre just not very reliable because I did not get the formula MgO. I am confident that my results are accurate but Im not confident enough to believe that my results are reliable because when looking at the logical ratio it should be 24:16 but mine is 72:32 in atomic mass terms. Which does not really make much sense because naturally an atom would want a full shell but in this case only 4 out 5 atoms in the molecule are getting full shells, so I would believe that my results are very unreliable and when looking at what possible formulas there are, there really are loads which means that the formula which I have is very unlikely to be true, in fact many different formulas could have been made during just one test for one length. The method which I have used was quite accurate because of the equipment which we have used. One very accurate equipment which I used was the digital balance (0. 01g) and that was very accurate because it was able to measure the small changes in mass. The Bunsen burner was also good to use because it gave a constant supply of heat at roughly the same temperature throughout the experiment. The pipe-clay triangle made your results accurate because it made sure that the crucible was placed securely on the tripod and it also made sure no heat was blocked for the crucible. A method such as waiting for there to be no change in mass was an accurate method because it was easy to see if there was no change in mass. An easy way to figure this out is to replace â€Å"affect† with the verb â€Å"alter† and see if the sentence works: I don’t think this will alter the budget. Yes – it still makes sense, so â€Å"affect† is the word you want. Here’s another sentence: We haven’t yet experienced the full [affect/effect] of climate change. Can we use â€Å"affect† here? Try replacing it with â€Å"alter†: We haven’t yet experienced the full alter of climate change. No, that doesn’t make sense at all. How about â€Å"effect†? Try replacing that with the noun â€Å"end result†: We haven’t yet experienced the full end result of climate changes. It’s a slightly inelegant sentence – but it does work grammatically. So â€Å"effect† is the word you want here. This rule won’t work for every single situation, but in most cases, it’ll help you quickly select the word that you want. What About Affect as a Noun and Effect as a Verb? It’s fairly rare to come across â€Å"affect† used as a noun: as we saw above, when it is used in this way, it means â€Å"mental state†. You might encounter it in some older works or fairly scientific ones about psychiatry. It’s a little more common to come across â€Å"effect† used as a verb, though this is still fairly rare and it can seem a little old-fashioned in this context. It’s used to mean â€Å"brought about† or â€Å"accomplished† – e.g. â€Å"The rapid changes she made after she got the job effected a complete turnaround in the company’s financial position.† In any case where you’re uncertain, though, it’s likely that affect is a verb (replace it with â€Å"alter† to check) and effect is a noun (replace it with â€Å"end result† to check).
